Ibadan Record First Rain In 2017

Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday recorded its first rain of the year following a down pour in some parts of the metropolis.

The rain started at about 6.45 p.m.  in some parts of the metropolis and lasted between  10 and 45  minutes  in areas such as Mokola, Akpata, Omio- Adio, Eleyele,  Oke-padre, Oremeji, Apete and Sango.

Although there was a slight drizzle in areas such as Challenge and Fodacis, many residents expressed the hope that the rains would bring relief in the face of the hot weather currently being experienced.

The rain was preceded in some areas by heavy wind and thunder storm, although there was no report of destruction to property yet.

Mrs Comfort Ajayi, who resides at Eleyele area of Ibadan, described the rainfall as a welcome the development.

“I am very happy  to witness  the rain fall;  the weather has not been friendly for some time now  and I believe  the rains will  usher in a more favourable weather,’’ she said.

Also speaking, Mr Chukwunwike Ifeajika, said that the prevailing dusty weather would soon give way.

He, however, urged the Ministry of Environment to clean up the drains so as to allow free flow of water before the rainy season commences fully.

Ayodeji Akinlabi, a resident, said the downpour would bring relief to many who had been suffering due to the current hot weather.

“Today’s rainfall is a soothing relief to many people because the heat has become unbearable.

“The worsening public power supply situation had made many to look forward expectantly to the commencement of the rainy season, ’’ he said.

Mrs Bimpe Olagunju, a resident of Apete, told NAN that the rain, which started about 6.45 p.m., was heavy and lasted for about 45 minutes.

Olagunju, however, said she was delighted over the rainfall “because it would reduce the current heat wave.”

A resident of Oremeji-Agugu, Mr James Alabi, who said the rain fell at about 6.34 p.m., expressed optimism that it would enhance the Harmattan season and make fruit bearing crops to produce well.
